      In her latest, Skenandore (The Undertaker's Assistant, 2019) presents Dr. Tucia Hatherley, an impoverished former physician desperate to erase her debts. Seduced by Huey Horn, a literal snake-oil salesman, Tucia agrees to serve with his traveling medicine show in exchange for paying off her creditors. Huey is a cruel obligee, and his demands grow increasingly unreasonable not only for Tucia, but for the rest of the ensemble as well. Skenandore focuses on the rich inner lives of the other performers: Fanny, a giantess and classically trained ballerina; Cal, a disabled musical prodigy; Lawrence, a Native American comedic genius; and Darl, a talented mechanic and carpenter. As the troupe travels across Texas, Huey makes the ill-fated decision to bring them to Galveston in time for the deadliest natural disaster in American history. Skenandore toys with the reader, letting certain characters' lives hang in the balance, but ultimately and enjoyably resolves each person's fate.
